The boxing bowl was built entirely from recreational funds within the command to provide entertainment for the soldiers far away from home. The Schofield Boxing Bowl was built in 1923 with only the center area covered. A roof was added in 1932 to protect the spectators from frequent rain showers. In 1954 the bowl was named in honor of Col James G Conroy, former commander of the 165th Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division, who was killed directing tanks against Japanese bunkers on Makin Atoll in 1943. Today it is still used as a sports facility as well as a staging area for troop deployments.
