The post theater, built in 1933, was constructed using the "art decor" style which was very popular at the time. "Art decor" is characterized by its round edges and geometric ornamentation. This style is also found in other Schofield Barracks construction from the 1930’s. Constructed by the 3rd Engineer Regiment, the theater was the largest building of its type on Oahu, seating 1400 people. "Talking pictures" were fairly new then and the theater proved to be tremendously popular. In February 1967, the theater was named in honor of Platoon Sergeant E R Smith, a resident of Wahiawa who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam.
