The first barracks built ("B" Quad) were completed in 1914 and were soon followed by "C" Quad in 1915-1916. The barracks were built according to standard Army design using Second Renaissance Revival Style. The high ceilings and deep porches on the courtyard side, along with the Hawaiian trade winds, aided in keeping the rooms cool.
Each barracks had eight squad bays which have since been converted to semiprivate two and four man rooms. The expanded artillery prompted the development of a separate artillery area, north of the infantry area, built between 1919 and 1923. The final infantry quad to be built, "F" Quad, was completed in 1931. The area now called "A" Quad was planned to have been like all the other quads, but was not built until 1986.
