The Post Stockade was constructed in 1918 but did not become operational until 1921. The facility held up to 450 prisoners during World War II. During World War II, there were several escape attempts and some prisoners who succeeded in escaping. The last prisoner execution was on April 22, 1947. This was the last person in Hawaii to die by capital punishment. The facility is designed to handle 76 prisoners.
